Challenge
A leading European Transmission System Operator (TSO) is legally responsible for keeping the electricity grid balanced at all times. As the energy transition accelerated, the number of Balancing Service Providers (BSPs) grew rapidly, many using renewable and distributed assets. This growth increased operational complexity and exposed limitations in existing, manual prequalification processes.
Multiple workflows existed for Technical Installation (TI) prequalification, testing, portfolio changes, and Go Live. Prequalifications are valid for five years, requiring timely requalification, while all changes had to be communicated to Grid Operators and fully traceable over time. The client needed a way to shorten onboarding timelines, reduce manual effort, and establish a single source of truth without compromising regulatory compliance.
Solution
We designed and implemented a centralized, full-stack application that digitizes the complete lifecycle of BSP prequalification and portfolio management. The solution combines a web portal for BSPs and Grid Operators with an internal application for TSO employees, supported by a centralized, time-dependent data model.
State machine–driven workflows standardize processes, while real-time notifications keep all parties aligned. Automated scheduling supports requalification requirements, and integrated reporting provides consistent, auditable outputs. The platform was built as a modern, cloud-ready application with scalability, performance, and security aligned to the client’s standards.
Business Value
The solution significantly shortened BSP onboarding and prequalification timelines and reduced manual operational workload. Clear, role-based views improved transparency and trust between market participants, while fast access to complex, historical data strengthened regulatory compliance.
By establishing a single source of truth, the TSO can now scale its balancing operations in line with the energy transition while maintaining grid stability.
